Introduction

At global level, the livestock sector faces the challenge of meeting the increased demand for meat, milk and other animal products, while at the same time contributing to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Objectives in terms of protection of the natural resource base, impact on climate, production of safe and quality food, poverty reduction and development of productive systems adapted to climate variability, among others.

Silvopastoral Systems, which combine the production of grasses with shrubs and trees, stand out among the most important options to face these challenges, since they allow the generation of agricultural products while contributing to the conservation of biodiversity, adaptation to change Recovery of degraded soils and reduce the effects on climate and dependence on inputs external to production.

Latin America has led research and application of silvopastoral knowledge, with important contributions from other regions of the world.

In order to share this knowledge and bring together actors from different parts of Latin America, in 1999 the first Congress of Livestock Agroforestry in Cali (Colombia), convened by the CIPAV Foundation and FAO, was held. Formed a network of experts in the field. CATIE was subsequently joined to this initiative, as well as universities and research centers from several countries in the region. The process since then has been continuous and successful; The second congress was held in San José (Costa Rica) in 2001; The third in Merida (Mexico) in 2004; The fourth in Varadero (Cuba) in 2006; The fifth in Maracay (Venezuela) in 2008; The sixth in Panama City (Panama) in 2010; The seventh in Belen (Brazil) in 2012 and the eighth in Iguazú (Argentina) in 2015.

In its ninth version, the International Congress Silvopastoril returns to Colombia with the participation of the Global Network of Silvopastoral Systems and the Sustainable Colombian Livestock Project with the support of several national and international entities and local actors.

The Congress will be held in the beautiful city of Manizales in the coffee zone, one of the regions where the Sustainable Colombian Livestock Project promotes Silvopastoral Systems in the country.

The Instituto Colombiano Agropecuario ICA officially declared an outbreak of foot-and-mouth disease in the country, after confirming it in the laboratory (See Resolution 00007889 of the ICA). The focus has already been concluded, however, a second focus has been reported in the department of Cundinamarca. Due to the established control measures, and to the declaration of sanitary emergency in the national territory, the field trip of the Congress scheduled for September 7 HAS BEEN CANCELED. In its place will have a schedule with keynotes, papers sent by participants and successful silvopastoral cases.
